What are the Best Decisions in Long Beach History?

As a contrast to a list currently being compiled on another Long Beach website about the ten worst decisions in Long Beach history, I felt it might be a more productive use of our time to compile a list of the ten best decisions in Long Beach's History. Being negative is easy. Negativity, I'm sure also sells papers. Don't get me wrong, I know LB has made many a mistakes, I just hate to see it be pulled on for the purpose of stirring up peoples emotions.

I believe as my father taught me, you have to focus on what you want in life. So, if our goal is positive change then let us focus on the positive.

So CityLifers, I ask you what are Long Beach's BEST decisions in it's history?

I'll go first with a recent example. It's support of the LB Depot for Creative re-use, see Mayor Fosters "Really, Really Free Day" Proclamation for details.

Your turn... Next, maybe we'll build a list of what you'd like to see Long Beach do. We can collectively present that list to city officials and ask them to work on it. I might be naive, but at least this could give us a positive direction to head in. I hope you'll participate.

Communities Uniting and beginning to take control of our position in Long Beach instead of letting gentrification rule Long Beach while the City Rebuilds. Groups are Uniting and showing their presence in positive ways.

Matt,

That's the outcome.  Who is engaged now, and why?  What actions will you take to get others to be engaged?  Are multiple strategies required to engage different populations?  Will there be a way to measure success?

As someone said, "Tactics do not a strategy make."

Here's a proven model for successfully implementing any strategy:

RESEARCH >> PLAN >> ACTION >> ENGAGE >> MEASURE

If you want to talk about this further, let me know.

i Think as a whole the amount of festivals and progressive environmental events are the things that make me always want to live in LB. Funk Fest and Zombie walk are the things that get me as excited as a kid counting down the days till xmas.

Homeland cultural center is also one of my top places, world renowned dancers teach for free and the multiple cultural programs co-existing in a notoriously dangerous neighborhood.

What beats all these though is the DOPE people that make LB special. I've never met so many dynamic personalities dedicated to making their neighborhoods thrive. For every community led project like the Really Really Free day that was held by Lisa and her daughter Yoshino (coincidentally they are family friends that also moved from Oakland) and also the amount of support the community gives these events.

@Sander; Self reflection is of course important, but sitting around whining and complaining never helped solve anything. That's why I say focus on the positive action that you want, my friend...

@Efren; Great list! I do think City Place is a massive improvement over the previous Mall. It does, however need some better store front activations I believe... Also, I'd like to see more local bands for SAM. Love the Aquarium. A commentator on the blog about the worst decisions had said that was a mistake and that they should have built a NFL stadium instead... BLAH.

I don't think it wrong to focus, occasionally, on mistakes.  Our City is actually notorious for repeating tragic gaffs again and again, especially when it relates to development.  Also, one thing I've learned is that there is a very strong resistance amongst City staff to thinking about or actually changing policies and practices that have nothing to do with what the people, or their elected representatives, actually want.  I think it useful, or important, to learn about, understand, and engage deeply in addressing these issues because they, in no small way, shape the future of our city far more than we care to believe.  So, while I agree that there is much to celebrate, I also believe that we cannot turn a blind eye to the very real problems that face us, and their root causes.
