Comment by The Man on May 21, 2011 at 10:00am In my family, and pretty much for my whole life, we use plastic bags for a lot of things. But if studies show that plastic bags play a huge role as a hazard in the environment, I'm down to make a change to get rid of the bags.
At the same time there are people who use them and don't have it in their budget to pay for 10 plastic bags that used to be free. Maybe grocery stores will go the Costco route and use boxes and stuff.
While I am totally on board with going green but that should be pretty obvious by now.
My mother in law actually brought up a good point about using the reusable bags. According to her, before plastic bags were used to the degree they are now, people used to bring in their own bags to the store but also brought in unwanted critters. She remembers shopping with her mom at the grocery store and it was known that bugs would be all over the food. One would need to, basically, look the other way while shopping.
These critters were brought in by the patrons themselves in their bags. There may have been bug eggs and small critters that the naked eye can't see. Granted, the health codes and whatnot may not have been fully enforced to stop these little guys from coming in on the product shipments.
I know we all like to think that we live in a world that all homes are clean and bugs are not something we should worry about but that isn't always the case. You don't know how other or where other people that shop in your store live. Or even where they keep their reusable bags. This is partly why plastic bags were brought into the stores and the problem eased up a bit in the stores. Laws and regulations were put into place to help try and get it cleaned up to the point where people felt better about going shopping. We usually skip the produce aisle, except for a few things, as I am expanding my garden/mini-farm.
That's my two cents.
Luis
