If you are interested in seeing some really excellent indie bands, I'd like to recommend RX Club at Que Sera. There are usually 3 bands with a liquid light show by The Borealis Co. It draws a mellow, eclectic crowd, people that you might see hanging out at Spaceland or The Echo in L.A. This is the place to go to see a band that's unique, way out of the ordinary and ultra swingin'. Some bands that have played at RX Club are Dead Meadow, Farflung, Telomere Repair and The Fancy Space people and the Bug Eyed Sprites. In between bands dj's spin a mix of Northern Soul, acid rock, garage and indie pop.
I've been there twice and was very impressed by the talent showcased. The first time I went, there were bands playing covers of The Jam, Joy Division and The Velvet Underground. Each band blended their own unique style into the songs of the legendary bands. The place was packed. People were dancing and the oil lights were swirling with the pulse of the music. Rx club is a prescription for a stimulating multi sensory experience.
I went to RX last weekend and saw Repeater, a local Long Beach band. In a live show, they weave a spell of haunting melodic vocals and velvety textured sounds. The lyrics, sad, tortured and passionate are delivered by eccentric front man Steve. In their sound you may sift out the influences of Radiohead, Slowdive, My Bloody Valentine, The Chameleons, post punk and shoegaze bands. You can hear their songs on myspace, but I prefer to hear them live. They will be playing at the Prospector on January 17th if you want to check them out. http://www.myspace.com/repeaterband
Rob- keyboards, Alex-Guitars, Steve - vocals, Victor C - Bass and Matt- Drums
I also experienced Soon, a psychedelic ensemble that sounded like a music soundtrack from the 60s. They are the kind of band that can transport you to another time and place with their swirling blend of garage, shoegaze and acid rock. They invite you to sit back, close your eyes and just take in the ebb and flow of sounds. http://www.myspace.com/soon
Stay tuned for the next Rx Club to take place on February 7th, with the lineup TBA. I'll keep you posted.
