Raise your cell phone against Cuban Pete's

Disclaimer: I just want to make one thing very clear. I'm not raising my voice against Cuban Pete's as a business but for the promotion tactics it has employed. I'm sure it's a fine establishment. Heck, the place actually sounds decent...until we all got spammed on our phones. We only implore you to review how you are promoting your business--or more like how your promoter is doing it--and to seize sending us unsolicited and unwanted text messages.  Just leave us alone, that is all we are asking.

It seems a lot of LBC citizens have been spammed several times by "George the Promoter" of Cuban Pete's, a nightclub going in at The Hop.  Not only the message was unsolicited, it showed up all hours of the day as well.

"Text George the Promoter to get VIP passes to the night club" is usually the main message.

Annoying? Yes. Frustrating? Absolutely. Violating a law? May be.  Pretty sure text spamming is illegal to folks whose numbers are on the Do Not Call list like myself.

Do we have to suffer in silence? Not really.

There are the right ways to promote your business, and there are the wrong ways. I don't know if you know what "George" is doing, but he's not helping your business. And now there are shilling on Yelp to try to boost the rating. That is just not making things any better for the angry mob of people who got text spammed.

According to the good people of Yelp, different phone numbers were used to send these texts. Folks would call to complain at the joint itself but phone calls to the establishment gets roll to voicemail, goes unreturned, or worse, whoever answered the phone claims to know nothing about Cuban Pete's.

We can still do something about it.  File a complaint with the FCC.  Voice your opinion on Yelp. And from some observations, the spam seems to be targeting Verizon customers, perhaps we should contact them as well.

ETA1: Thanks for folks passing along more info in the comments! There's a "George De La Vega Should Be Flogged for Spamming Text to Cell Phones" Facebook page up now and dude has his own website and contact form which I'd be careful filling anything out there...gosh knows what other spam list you're going to end up on!

ETA2: Shilling has begun over on Yelp.  "Yelpers" who just started yesterday popped up to give the place a raving review. I think that might just make it worse...?  I have flagged a few of them and I think the great people of Yelp had taken some down, I believe.

ETA3: Another Yelper Matt W. did some detective work and found contact information. And more information on the matter has been posted at the Flog George FB page mentioned above.

And just as how I don't give my business to people who leaves me door spam fliers, I will not give my business to people who spam my cell phone.

So there I said it. Voice your opinion here, kids.

Luis: Spread the word, brother.  Thank you for the report. It seems they have stopped with the 562 and start with other area codes...

Gotta add that my mother-in-law, that lives in Redondo Beach, got a text about Cuban Pete's. I overheard my wife on the phone telling her that the place is a few blocks away from us. I asked if she was in fact talking about Cuban Pete's and she asked me how I knew. I filled her in on the info.

I have some updates which I will start a new post about later on this weekend.

It seems Yelp is cracking down on some of the text spam reviews the crowd has been posting.  Sure, it wasn't an actual review of the food and services. But if a joint is being promoted with unethical/illegal practice, shouldn't we expose them?  It's not like we don't have proof of their wrongdoings.

My review of how the former incarnation (before new owner) of Charmed Cupcakes tried to scam my credit card--TWICE--was not taken down and it served the community well.  If that is allowed, how can the complaints about text spam be eliminated?

Matter not, if your review got delete, go back and re-post.  Don't give up!

The Dope Show and Matt: LOL I'm afraid to call them back. Gosh knows he'd collect your number and put it on another list!

A Yelper *did* take one for the team and went there over the weekend.  Apparently they actually do suck.

I like the Dope Shows idea... Let's all call the spot and tell them about something we'd like to promote...

Swalbers: I think we're going to have to step it up some more. I wonder of LBPost.com and other local papers would be interested in our little struggle. Hmm....

Apparently George isn't getting the message... got another text for Cuban Pete's tonight.

OMG! I don't even live in the LBC anymore, my cell is on the DNC list and this D-Bag George just text me from Cuban Pete's. I am pretty sure that mining for phone numbers is highly illegal and I am for damn sure not going to check them out.

You are right oakley... Haha Matt don't hate.

I used to get this sharkeez bar text, then I fixed the problem. ;0)
