If you thought the last Long Beach Zombie Walks were major, you haven't seen anything yet!
562CityLife has just learned that Logan Crow, Executive Director of Long Beach Cinematheque, has secured a formal partnership with the Long Beach Comic Con (LBCC) folks and are now aiming for the largest Zombie Walk EVER. To achieve this goal, Crow will need to pack at least 12,000 people into Downtown Long Beach the night of October 29th. This number however is just not a large enough, no instead the Long Beach Cinematheque is aiming for 20,000! That would not only set the record, but ensure that it's kept for years to come!
How will the lofty goal of assembling 20,000 walking dead into a three-four city block area be achieved? Well with the help of some heavy hitters of course. The Cinematheque has enlisted the help of the band Johnny Vatos, who will be doing their Tribute to Halloween and featuring former members of Oingo Boingo.
I caught up with Logan, somewhere in between Lola's and his downtown office, and asked him what exactly this years Zombie Walk means to him, and why it's so important to keep it in Long Beach:
"Well the Long Beach Zombie Walk speaks to many of my personal passions: creativity and the arts, horror cinema, free community events, and the Long Beach community in general. It's been such an incredible thing to watch grow, from a collection of our midnight cinema regulars and fellow film fans coming together a few years ago on a random March night to dress up and have fun, to last year's event that saw almost 3,000 people from all walks of life - families, children, community leaders, dancers, even a creatively-armored anti-Zombie militia - take to the street in all manner of creative dress and makeup. I named the Long Beach Cinematheque after two of the things I love the most - the city of Long Beach, and the art form of Cinema - and in keeping with that, I couldn't imagine hosting this event anywhere else but Long Beach. And I am thrilled that the event will see a new home this year on Pine Ave., because it will allow fantastic proximity for guests of our new partner, the Long Beach Comic Con, to stroll through downtown Long Beach and take in such an eclectic and exciting weekend of comics, cinema, the arts, live music by Johnny Vatos' Tribute to Halloween - featuring former members of Oingo Boingo! - and what will be THE largest Zombie Walk recognized by the Guinness Book of World Records!"
Also, as a critical part of the collaboration, Long Beach Cinematheque has been selected as the community organization beneficiary of this year's Art Auction, which will also benefit The Hero Initiative. They are currently searching for art submissions for the raffle which will be held via eBay and at the live event on October 29th, so you have plenty of time to get some original pieces together. For more details on this, please email LBCC directly at plawrence@longbeachcomiccon.com.
So, have you been to the previous ZombieWalks, or are you afraid of Zombies? After watching this video, maybe you should be.......
