Long Beach Resident, Jackie Joice, gets novel published!

The cover of Kanika’s Burden’s is based on Picasso’s Weeping Women series. Picasso wanted to portray the universal suffrage and melancholy of women whom were against war(Spanish Civil War, etc)  in this series.  The most famous and notable “Weeping Woman” portrait is of Picasso’s mistress, Dora Maar.
My main character is named Kanika Witherspoon. Kanika means “fragment of the cosmos” in Sanskrit or “dark cloth” in an East African language. Kanika Witherspoon watches over her eccentric mother’s mother referred to as “Grandma Lilymae.” Grandma Lilymae is obsessed with the Book of Revelations and the so called “End Times.”  Whereas,  Kanika just wants to enjoy life and find love. Unfortunately, Kanika was born into a lineage of religious fervor. Grandma Lilymae’s religious beliefs conflict with Kanika’s beliefs and Kanika soon discovers that maybe the “Devil is busy” and that she has more to conquer than just her Grandmother’s obsession and influence.
