Participating in the Long Beach Artwalk every month, I get many requests for more photos of this great city but I don't have a large library. I always say that I will be taking them but never really get to it and I'm getting tired of just saying it but never really doing it.

Today I am introducing my Long Beach Photo Project that will hopefully include many great shots in the city we all love. In order to make sure I stick to it and finish it, I am giving myself a deadline. This deadline is the end of August. I know this seems like a long time, but for now, I am working a full time job and the weekends are a bit full. I am not setting a specific amount of photos because if I set a minimum that may be too high, I will be taking photos just to take them but they may not be that good. Quality matters more than quantity for me.

Don't get me wrong, I do have some Long Beach photos already but this is more of a way for me to expand and practice my photography. Artists always need to try something new to keep themselves going because we also fall into "ruts" and I feel like I am in one now.

With this post, I am looking to accomplish 2 main things. The first one is to get the word out about the project and get people interested but the other is to ask for suggestions. I know this project should include the major buildings in Downtown LB and a few others around the city but I am looking to show the real Long Beach and not just the tourist areas.

I am asking for the opinions of Citylifers as to what they like in the city. Who knows the city the best other than the people that live and work in the city? Are there any specific places that you may think are unique and that need to be shared with everyone else?

Think about it citylifers, and drop a comment with suggestions.

Thanks,

Luis

You will be happy to know that I am plotting out the areas in Long Beach. Online research is yielding interesting facts about the city. I will be creating a schedule of what to shoot and when.

@Jorge - Thank you. I will see how many photos I will end up with at the end and the suggestion is great.

@Ryan - I completely agree. It doesn't matter which way you turn, as there is always something to look at.

I will keep updating the progress.

Luis, What a great project!!!

Let us know how we can help. Maybe creating a short film of the some of the best photos & coupling it with music or graphics or something.

I would love to help out in anyway with this project.

I think there has be a lot of good input on your project and the physical environment of LB is a feast for the eyes. Especially when ur riding a bike in my opinion.

Just a suggestion for future a possible future project, maybe a collage of photos of different residents living in different neighborhoods in LB and have their headshots make up a picture map of LB. I think this would be appealing for a few reasons, 1st since LB is one of the "most diverse cities" it would show our diversity and possibly highlight our somewhat self-segregation, but not in a hateful way, just in a matter of fact way.

This project could potentially be really easy to do given the internet age that we live in, and it might require some outreach.

I got the idea from this site http://www.asianweek.com/2010/01/28/be-part-of-the-wall-of-chinese-...

Let me start by thanking everyone that has replied to this post. The posts that I think that may not get many replies are usually the ones that just blow up.

I will attempt to reply to everybody here:

@ Jesus:

Signal Hill has the park up on the hill and I have shot Downtown from up there but the day really wasn't clear. I liked the shots but waiting for a clearer day. I can honestly say that I've never been down to Naples and its waterways. The Belmont Pier sounds great and should make for great shots. I never thought of shooting from the Queen Mary to get the shore; it sounds great.

@theman I love the idea of doing shots in the park. Courts lit up at early dusk with people running back and forth sounds great. The light and shadows would be interesting to see.  There is certain beauty that only an urban jungle can provide.

@562citylife I have some of the "usual shots" but it is all about making them look unique and different from all the other ones out there. Two different people can shoot the exact same thing but each looks different in its  own way.

I always take my camera to the events around the city and sometimes I find little gems.

@gdub I totally agree about the that "hidden beauty" and that is what I am after in all of my photography.

@lbcsrw I love the parks around the city and its wildlife. I know El Dorado has many animals that call the park home. I will be there for sure searching that photo op.

@Hartono Tai I checked out your site and there are some great shots in there. I lack the skills for editing and shooting HDR. I like to keep it simple.

@Terri - I don't think I have entered the OC Fair but I have done the San Diego Fair photo competition. I've entered a few times and got 1 shot in and actually got an Honorable mention. I stopped doing it because it got a bit pricey. I still have some large prints that I don't know what to do with.

@Molly - Thank you for the compliment. You oughta stop by the booth at the artwalk sometime. I'm usually right in front of ELEV8. I know about Rose Park but can't say that I have made it down there. I originally started with taking photos of flowers and  now I take pictures of anything, except people.

Is the lot you are talking about on 4th the one right by Lolas with the front end of the car? It is cool and it would give us an excuse to hit up Lolas. My wife and I have been once and we fell in love. The community gardens are great as well and that may be a project on its own. The Edible Gardens of Long Beach. I've already got the the wheels going on that one...

@kristylee - I don't think I've seen your website before but it looks great. I love the idea of getting local business involved as it stimulates the local economy. I don't shoot models or people in general. Part of me wants to get my "feet wet" but nothing has materialized yet.

@Matt - I will try to cover what I can but I agree, I just gotta do it and quit yapping about it so much.

I know I didn't reply to everybody directly but some comments said the same thing and I figured it would be easier to reply to all at once.

I love the idea of the street signs and signs around the city.

Apparently, I gotta hit up the skate parks and just the parks around the city.

I'm not sure how I will be sharing the end results but I may set up a separate gallery on my website for it. Of course, the final photos will be shared in a blog post here and will be offered as prints at the Artwalk. For now, I gotta choose some locations and plan it out. Stay tuned...

I like gdubs idea of the signs throughout the city too. I was thinking that and the different murals in the different neighborhoods... Just show the people and community as much as possible.... The main thing though, just do it.

At first when I saw this post I thought it was promoting my project..the Long Beach Pinyp Project. www.wix.com/diva98ri/lbpp but alas I was wrong. Thats ok. Much support to other photogs. Long Beach neighborhoods definatly have hidden gems if you look outside the lines.

Hey Luis, excited to see the outcome. Seen your photos before and am always impressed! I think LB has such nice parks, like the small but adorable Rose Park, and I never see photos of it (8th & Orizaba.) Also, the custom designed parking lot at the end of Retro Row on 4th & Cherry is totally LB, as well as the many community gardens. I imagine they have beautiful blossoms about this time. Oh yea, and definitely need to get some skateboarding shots in there. At sun down, the action shots of youngsters skating are amazing!

I pay $10 for each digital photo I enter into the Orange County Fair Digital Arts competition.  Judges choose the best of, and judges decide which are eligible for exhibit.  Winners submit a framed photo for exhibit during the fair. Perhaps you could do something similar only fees could be collected to benefit local charities and the 12 best photos could be exhibited at the LB Main Library or the Long Beach Airport.

make sure you hit the hoods as much as you hit the sightseeing parts. All of Long Beach deserves exposure and we don't see that nearly enough. Just look at some of the LB Facebook pages and sites... very onesided!
