In this hour-long documentary film a young multi-racial Kanaka Maoli (Native Hawaiian) woman, filmmaker Christen Hepuakoa Marquez, sets out to discover the meaning of her incredibly lengthy Hawaiian name from her estranged mother whose diagnosis as schizophrenic in the 80′s caused their family separation. Christen discovers not only herself within the name, but gains a whole new perspective on the idea of sanity and how cultural differences can sometimes muddle its definition.See More

Long Beach Park Jam Gets Ready For Good Vibes This Weekend

Every first Sunday of the month at Cesar Chavez Park from noon to 9 p.m., Long Beach residents and friends gather for the Park Jam Long Beach event. This serves as a community gathering and building function that also serves as a pot luck which encourages people to bring food to share with others.

I've never been to one but I plan on hitting it up this weekend. It seems like a really cool event with  live DJs,  live music, live art, big open potluck, dancing, blankets, friends, families, pets, games, and a lot of good vibes to go around. This is one of the event family events that doesn't get enough shine and coverage in my opinion. I've seen pictures from past Park Jams of drum circles, chalk painting and everyone enjoying the culture of those around. It's like a mini Burning Man (I think).

Check out the official Facebook page of the Park Jam by clicking here.

Anyways, have you been to a Park Jam before?  If so, what's it like? How was the vibe and atmosphere? Describe the typical day at this event. What's your favorite experience? What could be better at the pot luck? Would you recommend it to other City Lifers? Are you going to be there? What are your experiences with the park jam?

I think I've been going to Park Jam now for the past 4 years and have made so many good friends in the community from it. Most important thing: Please do not show up empty-handed. Collective I puts so much work and their own funds into making this event possible that we should only do the same. If people do not have time to cook or bring food, then please donate (i suggest $5 minimum) because it goes right back to make Park Jam possible for the following month. Let's keep this place alive! =)

I'm gonna do my best to make it out. Maybe bring a small BBQ grill to throw some meat on there. I only hear cool things about this function.

It's a really neat thing they have going wit Park Jam. People bring all types of food, picnic style, and it's always a good idea to bring meat (if u eat it) because I believe most people bring side dishes and snacks. Everyone just hangs out, listens to the music, kids play and drum circles definitely take place. It one of those events where mostly everyone knows each other, so bring a bunc of friends and mostly likely you will k ow others there!
