April is BOTH Earth Month and National Library Month coincidence ? I think not. Let me explain the connection.
1. Borrowing books, dvds, cds and other forms of media from the library saves natural resources and money.
2. You can learn more about how to save natural resources and money in all areas of you life at the library.
3. The Mark Twain branch of the Long Beach Public Library was the first green public building in Long Beach.
Do you Celebrate Earth Day/Month ?
I think that celebrating the earth and going green has become an abstract concept for a lot of people, like what exactly does it mean and how do you do it ?
Going green is trendy now, but it is not a new movement. My grandparents were the greenest people I ever knew. They taught me to reuse containers, to turn old things into new things ,and how to preserve what I already had. My grandparents learned the art of living simply after experiencing the great depression. The “greenest” periods of American history were during the times of conservation and rationing brought on during periods like WWI and WWII.
-Recreation Park is hosting an Earth Day and Children's Day Celebration on April 24th from 11a.m. -4p.m.
-El Dorado Park is celebrating the Earth and Mother Nature on April 25th from 10a.m. - 2p.m.
Do you go to the Library ?
I have always LOVED the library. When I was little I decided that one of my life time goals would be to get a library card from every state. Once I collected them all I wanted to get a fold out wallet photo album with 50 slots so I could flash them everywhere I went. Sadly, I only have three library cards and they are all from California. Happily, California libraries are awesome and I got my second library card from the Long Beach Public Library.
I try to read at least a book a month. My younger sister checked her textbooks out from the library instead of buying them. and she only had to pay for one this semester.
Library Month celebrations in Long Beach Include: crafts workshops, dancing and musical performances, live story telling, a health fair, a local authors’ festival, and talks with Councilwoman Gerrie Shipske and Councilman Pat O’Donnell.
There are many more events they are all free and food is served at some of them. For a full list with times and locations click HERE.
You can help the library by volunteering, donating books , or purchasing books from their Amazon wish-list.
What are you doing for Earth Day/Month ?
Have you been to the library lately ? if so what's the last book/cd/dvd that you checked out ?
Also, the Long Beach Water Department will have 35 additional groups set up outside the Aquarium on Sat April 24th. There is no admission fee to the outdoor event, and if you bring this flyer, you can get $10 off admission to the inside event (just in case you don't have any eWaste hanging around). http://www.lbwater.org/pdf/conservation/earthday.pdf
Well, First off, I really want to tell you how much I like this post. It's definitely going on my Facebook page today.
Second, I agree with what you say about your Grandparents being the greenest people ever. I mean to be honest, the reason I started living a "Green Lifestyle" is because I was broke. Baking Soda cleans EVERYTHING and its way cheaper than comet or scrubbing bubbles. It's also safe to use around my kids. Everything gets used in my house, a lot of things have dual purposes. Bring Green is not only trendy and much needed, its smart and if done wisely, its cost effective.
As for my green actions, I am organizing the Green Lb Festival.
Finally, (I know, I know) I just took my kids to the library last week. Sadly, I have been slacking n taking them their. It's just laziness on my part. Tv and internet get in the way of simple pleasures a lot of the time. The main library (downtown) was my refuge when I was younger. I grew up there and spent a lot of time in the reading bathtub. I got to love my two favorite librarians Ms.Pratt (Now retired) and Ms. McMillian ( now the head of the library). We got to be so close in fact that both Librarians came to visit me after the birth of my children. I even have pictures of them holding my oldest when he was a week old. Now, after being away for so long, my kids love the library! I took my youngest and got a huge book on trucks, his favorite thing. I tried to get him to sit in the reading bath tub but he had a fit when I took his shoes of (as per policy). My oldest and I talk about books and I recommend ones for him to read, so far I'm batting a thousand with him.
Thanks for making my day with this article. You just reminded me of why I do what I do and awaken something in me that has been quietly dozing. Off to the library TODAY!
Sorry, this took so long, but you made me dreamy for the das
