Mayor Bob Foster was recently presented with the Chi Mui award in recognition of his civic activism and public service. It was focused on his efforts with the cleaning of the Los Angeles River and his partnership with Heal the Bay. The pollution in the waters of Long Beach has been a concern for many residents for some time now.
This press release gives more information on his achievement in Long Beach. One thing that I would've liked to see were statistics on the changes he's made. According to this document, the people of Long Beach can only rely on the information presented.
How much has he changed in the waters of Long Beach in comparison to recent years?
The award also highlighted Mayor Foster’s participation in FoLAR events, including working side-by-side with volunteers in the Great Los Angeles River Clean-up every year since
taking office as mayor. This year Mayor Foster would like to challenge
all of the mayors of the 14 L.A. County cities that front the Los Angeles
River to join him at the next Great Los Angeles River Clean-up. FoLAR
also recognized that Long Beach has retrofitted its storm drains to keep
trash out of the river and off the beaches during Mayor Foster’s time
in office.
The award is named after the late
Chi Mui, former Friends of the Los Angeles River board member and mayor
of San Gabriel. The Honorable Chi Mui was known for his principled
and knowledgeable civic activism and generous public service. Other
FoLAR honorees included the Cheonggyecheon Stream Restoration Team (Seoul,
Korea), Coca-Cola North America, Cornerstone Theater Company, Heal the
Bay and Los Angeles River Keepers.
