DUI Checkpoints will be in Downtown Long Beach

Hey CityLifers, I read on the Press Telegram's website about DUI Checkpoints in the downtown area this weekend and I thought I would share it with you all.

"The checkpoint will be in the South Division, which includes Downtown Long Beach. It is designed to get drunk drivers and those driving without licenses, or on suspended licenses, off the street while educating the public about the dangers of impaired driving, Officer Israel Ramirez said."

The article also encourages Long Beach citizens who see drunk or impaired driving while they are out on the town to report it 9-11 immediately.

After my motorcycle accident on Mother's Day of '07, I make sure I drive super carefully and I have made sure I watch out for drunk drivers or anyone that can kill me! Have you had any close calls or have you been given a DUI ticket? Tell us your experience and your thoughts on the city and LBPD taking these preventive measures.

On another note, don't forget about our 562CityLife T-shirt contest in association with Red Eye Media! For rules and details just click here: 562CityLife T-Shirt Rules.

I think it would be more effective if they will send more units on the freeway anytime after midnight. Any time I come back from Hollywood on the wknd after going out, I'm so scare to jump in the 101 because immediately I see this cars flying by or swerving all the way to the LBC, once I'm on the 710 South many times I have been close to getting hit by a driver that is falling sleep.

There is many spots on the 710 FWY for police cars to sit & wait for this drivers.

I can't reiterate enough that the statistics on these checkpoints demonstrate NO success in the area of safety or keeping drunk drivers off the road. A typical one = 4 dui arrest and 78 impounds for driving without a license, and these drivers are competent drivers, they just happen to not be allowed to get a legal license. It is heartbreaking to watch a video of a family being left behind as their car is towed for 30 days. And if anyone was concerned about safety, would they leave a family with young children on the side of the road? Any police officer or tow truck operator that participates in this scheme deserves what ever bad things they get in life, because they do NOT have to. It is against the law, and they do it anyway.

I think DUI check points are great and all for those holiday weekends, but i'm with @PerfectIntent on this one.
I now live in Riverside County and out there their are a lot of people from Mexico and other parts, migrated to the U.S and who have worked really hard to get the big nice house they live in and still work really hard to support their families! We've recently had a lot of "DUI Checkpoints" which is outrageous that they would not only have them during a normal weekend but DURING THE DAY?!?!? Really? If it was really a "DUI Checkpoint" then why would they conduct it in the middle of the day? Everyone who is drunk avoids these checkpoints because like @Sophia said they are all made public, there are always people one or two blocks ahead of it with big signs that tell the Drunk drivers it's coming up.
I think they should just focus on the freeways since that's were all the drunk drivers are and that is usually were serious and deadly accidents occur. They should really stop doing all these random checkpoints to just increase the city's income and steal money and mess up the lives of hard working people!

I got a DUI in December 09. To this day, (i'm doing the 9 month program) people are in these Alcohol Education programs whining about the money they spend on paying for the ticket and the program itself. I understand people think it's a lot of money and it's only being done to generate some kind of income for the city. When people make these laws and apply these fines, I think some of it is made for a profit BUT there are some people who have their hearts in the right place when making these laws. Some, not all.

I feel like these fines and programs are really made to impact those "few" people it actually does work on. I've learned A LOT from my experience and to be honest, my life is a lot more meaningful since I had my accident. It wasn't only because I actually survived a pretty bad crash. The program itself and what i'm learning in the program is actually what is making an impact for me.

The illegals is another topic. The DUI checkpoints are actually something that really can save lives if it weren't made so public. Once it's public, everyone just drives around them.

It's great to read everyone's thoughts and not all of them are the same. We think thats what's cool about you all!

Ryan, this city is growing to be that "bike" city. It's good to see that and at least if you crash you won't hurt yourself.

And you're right, it's only in one area, and all people have to do is drive around...

We are not the only ones:

El Centro Police plan on conducting checkpoint Friday

The El Centro Police Department plans on conducting a sobriety and drivers license checkpoint Friday from 8 p.m. to 3 a.m., according to a press statement.

The ECPD is using the checkpoint is a means of reducing impaired driving and insuring that motorists have a valid driver's license. Funding for the checkpoint is provided by a grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

Just a reminder if you didn't get this from my earlier post. This is NOT about drunk driving. It is about going after our undocumented friends (also called illegals sometimes), so that the city can (with our approval) impound their cars for 30 days and charge storage fees. Of course we all know drinking and driving is stupid. BUT this program does nothing to curtail it!!! It simply robs money from the hardworking people of our city. And to those of you who say they deserve it because they're illegal. That is another issue and it shouldn't be hidden under this false cry of drunk driving. These checkpoints that last about 4-6 hours generally end up with about 4 DUI arrest, and those are not the drunks that are recklessly crashing on our highways at 80 mph. Don't drink and drive and don't steal money from innocent people.

Yes you can, but is harder to determine if the person driving the bike is drunk or is just having a hard time balancing their bike haha =)

You can get a DUI on a bicycle. PS Buzzed driving = drunk driving. Let's all be safe!
Comment by ryanthelion on July 29, 2010 at 9:22am
This is why everyone should ride a bike :)

No expensive parking, you don't put others at risk. And come on, its Long Beach, from home to the club will only take you 30-45 minutes.

If you crash cuz you are too drunk you only hurt yourself.
