There's a new bike shop in the neighborhood and, if you happen to drive past its Market Street facing window, you can't help but want to go in and take a look.
Edith Barrera is the owner of Colors Bicycle Shop at 279 E. Market St. Long Beach CA, 90805, which opened its doors no more than a month ago. They sell everything from tricycles for 2-year-olds to beach cruisers and mountain bikes for serious riders. They have spare parts and even tools for do-it-yourself bike projects. Their main attraction is...you guessed it! The fixed gear bike or "fixies."
This North Long Beach shop sells 100% fully customizable fixies which are assembled in-house. If someone wants a certain color scheme or theme for their fixie, the shop can paint the frame, match the seat, even go so far as painting and bending the spokes on the wheel for a completely custom look.
In their few short weeks of business, Colors has seen a great demand for their products. "Their bikes are dope, and they hook 'em up...I went to this other shop in down town and their shit was way more expensive," said Desmond P, a customer of the shop.
But even with their short time in business, the shop has had to ride out its share of problems. To open up the shop, even though the building had been vacant for two years, they had to take out 2 permits at $600 JUST to "convert" the building from a beauty salon to a bike shop. The city was also difficult to deal with, Edith and her husband had to return 9 times because they were asked to bring something new every time. Edith had to get a small business lisence from Long Beach and, according to her, it was alost twice the cost of what her father pays in Paramount for his small business lisence.
The shop owners don't regret opening their first shop in long beach. "There are a lot of people riding bikes in Long Beach," said Edith.
Do you ride a bike? What do you think of the way this shop struggled to open its doors? Have you seen other bike shops in Long Beach? Why do you think bike riding has become more popular in Long Beach recently?

Comment by The Man on March 29, 2011 at 11:03am @Sandra M. Beltran yea it's cool to see those bike lanes there. But since I go downtown everyday, it's a hassle because the bike routes replaces a car lane that causes more traffic. Aside from the beef that bikers and the police had, it's cool to see that the City and residents are working together to reach a middle ground so biking can be embraced in Long Beach.
Holla.

Comment by 562citylife on March 29, 2011 at 10:42am There's a shop in North Long Beach called Rusty Junky Bikes. Real small store but it has a lot of inventory! The owner, Rusty is cool. He can talk a lot but he knows a lot about bikes!
I'll have to check out this new spot. I think bike riding got popular due to the recent Critical Mass incidents.
Comment by Jesus Hernandez on March 29, 2011 at 10:33am oh, im sorry. i will fix that ASAP
