City Magazine; One Years Work in 29 Pages

The new issue of City Magazine dropped 5/12/11. What is City Magazine? It is the collaborated effort of three classes, two semesters, and hundreds of hours of hard work. Long Beach City College has a small but prominent journalism program that allows students from all skill levels to report on issues they think are news worthy. The Viking, LBCC's newspaper, produces a new issue every two weeks and unfortunately City Magazine cannot come near being printed so often.

This magazine had gotten tons of recognition in the JACC which is a state wide competition for community college magazines. City Mag is also where a familiar character that goes by The Man had his work published on the previous issue which got overall excellence in the competition.

This issue features many talented young journalists... and yours truly.
With Long Beach being one of the most diverse cities in the country, City Mag did its best to tackle a bread range of topics.

What’s Love Got to do With it?- This piece talks about casual sex in today’s College students life. We talked to two college students and two industry professionals.

Hipster Redefined is a photo essay that includes quotes from students that might be considered "hipsters."

Is a Bitch Still a Bitch goes deep into the evolution of "bitch" and how pop culture has had an influence on it.

Have you Rated Your Professor Today?- Have you ever heard of the popular website named Rate My Professor? Well this piece goes into the validity of it and how reliable those ratings really are.

The Woman in the Mirror talks about a transgender lesbian. Basically, Daniel Chavez is an anatomical male that is biologically a female who is attracted to women(read the article).

What's Your Secret?- This popular website has thousands of people mailing in secrets anonymously, and they post them online.

Haunted Long Beach is a story about what was experienced when a couple LBCC students visited some of Long Beaches well known haunted hotspots.

Prom Dreams Come True is about how a non-profit organization helps high school girls realize their dream of attending prom even if they are on a budget.

True Life of a Bisexual introduces Danielle Darrow and her unorthodox love life. She was on MTV because she had both a boyfriend and a girlfriend.

Are you Down with the Underground?- As you all know, Long Beach has a number of underground artist, this article is about just a few students at LBCC that are aspiring musicians.

Love and Betrayal talks about what infidelity is, why people might do it, and gives six signs of a cheating partner.

What topics jump out at you as interesting? Did you know LBCC had a magazine? What topics do you think the magazine should have covered that they didn't?

Props on the new issue, Jesus. I had the pleasure of being part of two City Mag staff's and it was a great learning experience. I'm glad LBCC's journalism program is getting some light outside of campus. Professors like Cindy Frye on the writing end and Evan Ballinger on the production end really do a service to students in the program. And because of their efforts along with past advisors such as Professors Schoenberg and Redmond, I was able to parlay that experience into several paid journalism gigs (which I'm still currently doing). Anyone who reads this, even if you aren't a journalism major, consider taking the classes. You can't lose. Ben Smith aka Michael B., 2007 City Mag writer and 2008 City Mag co-editor in chief.

"What topics do you think the magazine should have covered that they didn't?"  Damn.  I think they hit just about everything.  I was gonna say the economy but they touched on that too! :D

If they have an online edition (PDF download?) I'd be glad to get it.  Not likely I will get by LBCC before issues runs out.  Do they mail them?

What I really like most about this issue are the article topics. Good choices. And they seem relevant with the college lifestyle. I'm sure this is going to win major awards at the next JACC

Its on the news racks around school. I'd say your best bet of finding one is in the N building. I hadn't heard about it either until I registered for the class haha.

Hey I attend LBCC and have never seen it, where can I get it?

This is awesome you guys, great job!

@stephanie, the magazine is mainly distributed at school. Unfortunately we kind of have a limited production run, but we are currently working on the online version as well. As soon as that is up and running, I will post up a link.

Thank you all for the love, I can't show you how much it means.

@Lisa, you're so right! These programs are amazing and they offer so much help that I don't know why more people aren't involved!
@Hamp- hell yeah its dope to see my name in print! Thanks brotha!

Where can I pick up a copy of this? Do you guys distribute outside of campus as well? The topics sound very interesting. You are a very skilled writer Jesus! Your words flow very smoothly together and I really enjoy reading your blog posts. Keep it up.

Our city college has some very awesome programs and is not given the grand status it really deserves. It is really the best deal in town! LBCC rocks!

Good work man, I like the cover and it's tight you got the lead story in there. Good ish!

You should be proud of yourself and the City Magazine team for making a good product. Feels good to see your name in print huh? Holla.
