Hey there, CityLIfers!
This is my first blog on 562CityLife, and lo and behold, I'm not even in Long Beach (or California for that matter),
After an 8-hour journey via the CA 14 and US 395, I'm sitting in a Reno hotel room awaiting the time that I will depart the biggest little city for the temporary municipality known as Black Rock City.
Black Rock City is home to the week-long event known as Burning Man. Located on a dry lakebed in the Black Rock desert known affactionately as the "playa" (pronounced "ply-ah"), Burning Man is an event like no other. To simply call the event a festival is to not tell the whole story.
I'm camping with a group of fire performers from Long Beach, Orange County and Los Angeles called The Burn Academy. During the other 51 weeks of the year, The Burn Academy meets at Colorado Lagoon at 4th and Park to practice, learn, and teach the use of fire props like staves and poi.
So, my dear CityLifers, If you've never been to Burning Man or have preconcieved notions about it, I plan on sharing a glimpse of what the burn is all about and the people who participate in it. Hopefully, the wifi gods will smile upon me out there in the desert.
