Eight years ago, I and a talented poet named Mike Sonksen wrote for 562 Magazine. I've saved most of my copies (I have some duplicates too). Anyhow, I have some copies dating all the way back to early 2003. Sonksen wrote most of the historical content for the magazine. I mainly wrote features about new businesses and thriving restaurants in the Long Beach area. This was my favorite part of writing for 562, the food section and setting up interviews with individuals and meeting them face to face with a voice recorder and TALKING to them.
Also, I absolutely love writing about food. In fact, here's a plug for an anthology I'm putting together called The Culinary Coquette.Visit the Culinary Coquette and read the "call for submissions" and submit something by June 1st.
Anyhow, the editor, named Matt Hennings was pleasant to work with. Where are you Matt Hennings?? I miss you ! Matt was very professional, warm, and friendly. The magazine contained quality writing and was the magazine to be involved with back in the day. It has become increasingly difficult for print magazines to survive/compete with the internet. Personally, I'd rather have something tangible to flip through and sip on a cup of coffee in one of Long Beach's awesome coffeehouses. 562 Magazine's life span was short; it was in print for a little less than 2 years. Printing costs and paying employees became a challenge for the owners of the magazine. Yes, we got paid. So what IS the solution for print magazines to thrive/survive? Are they becoming a thing of the past ? Are they history ? artifacts? Will all our history be only available electronically decades into the future?

Comment by ThePrimeSpot.com on May 12, 2011 at 9:06am PS I have The Perfect Solution (TPS) but I can't share it because it's a secret! I used to write for "View From the Hill" newspaper based out of Signal Hill before "The View"-turned-"Long Beach" (monthly) started their "Lifestyle Magazine" (which I used to distribute to creative spaces and coffee shops in exchange for ad space). RIP View published Bob Magid.
Anyway, I've shared MANY a secret but I'm saving this one for the perfect entity. If not 562 it will prob be a female publisher because quite frankly I'm tired of The Men's Club here in The LBC!
