Local Artist’s Work at El Dorado Nature Center at El Dorado Nature Center Museum

July 6, 2013 to July 31, 2013
Long Beach artist Timothy Bulone’s work will hang at the El Dorado Nature Center here beginning Saturday, July 6. Bulone creates each of his images by starting with a digital photograph, then using a variety of computer programs to render them into art that is “more representational, more evocative, and more revelatory” than the original photo, he says. "Digital art sounds much too cold to me. I think of it as photographic art and of myself as an artist working in photography. I am so thankful…See More

Legendary V.I.P. World Famous Records Closes Shop

It's seems like times are definitely changing. Not sure if it's for the good or bad or whatever. But definitely, the closing of the world famous V.I.P. record store is in my opinion, another defeat in Long Beach's small business scene. For those who don't know (which I hope aren't many of you CIty Lifers), V.I.P. is home to many old school hip hop videos that featured Warren G, Snoop, Nate Dogg, and more. Remember this video?     To be…See More

North Long Beach's Inaugural Community Assembly

Since it's important to keep the community not only together, but involved, we have to remember that it's also essential for those same people to fellowship with each other. That's why 9th District Councilmember Steven Neal on July 23, hosted the first "North Long Beach Community Assembly" at Houghton Park in North Long Beach where more than 100 people showed up.

Since I live five minutes away, ( and being on Neal's staff) it was not a problem for me to check it out. It was really cool to see such a large turn out, considering the 9th District can be known for it's low turn out to events - but things are changing. This being a North Long Beach event also helped the turn out too with residents from Councilwoman Rae Gabelich's district as well. She also attended.

Seeing my neighbors seriously concerned and interested in what's going on in our neighborhood really gave it a strong "community vibe."

The event featured presentations from neighborhood associations, Redevelopment Agency, Police Department, Health Department, among others. Basically, it was a "Super Bowl" of neighborhood groups and associations.

Another interesting fact is that Mayor Bob Foster and Congresswoman Laura Richardson showed up too! Like outta nowhere man.

Anyways, the agenda went like this:

  • Neal gave opening remarks
  • Five minute presentation from each neighborhood group: name, role in neighborhood association, and interesting facts about group.
  • Mayor Foster gave a few remarks - stating how glad he was to see such a huge turn out and spoke about the importance about community involvement.
  • Councilwoman Rae Gabelich spoke,
  • City Manager Pat West gave a general overview of what he does.
  • City Prosecutor Doug Haubert spoke about the North Long Beach gang injunctions that targets the Insane Crip Gang and the Northside Longos, who have some sort of affiliation with the Mexican mafia.
  • North Division Police Commander Galen Carroll spoke about the latest crime trends and programs that people can get familiar with to handle crime and other police related issues.
  • The Redevelopment Agencies' North Project Officer, Tony Foster gave the latest updates on construction projects happening in the area. Some of the items he touched on were the status of the new Firestation 12 and the North Village Center.
  • There was also a presentation from the Health and Human Services Department, where people learned that about 55% of North Long Beach kids are obese.
  • Once that was all said and done, residents were encouraged to stay around and mingle.

SAY THAT!!!! The North needs mad support and incentive toward developing and expressing its creative side.....trust its there and ready.  I remember back in 1989 (even though I'm from and lived in the East) Houghton park was where i spit my first rhyme & swung my first racket (thanks to Unocal 76 sponsoring me to learn and compete in tennis tournaments).  I'll keep my eyes and ears open for this one...I'm totally feeling the idea.

No problem Brandy. I would love for NLB to be home of the city's street art scene. THAT would be tight. that would help create it's own identity from the other art areas in Long Beach

Oh yea, when the city prosecutor spoke about the gang injunctions, that had everyone's attention. I'm gonna write something up on that, or maybe we can get him on the show...

This was a cool event. Every meeting we have, there are more and more new neighbors who come who just want to know what's going on. That's a good start.

You would've liked it Eric.

I would say in my activity in community involvement in city wide terms would be an 8.6. But on my actual neighborhood block - 2. I hardly speak to my neighbors....

This sounds awesome! Man, I'm bummed that I couldn't make it. I had already committed to being on the west side for an event there. Keep up the awesome work!
