In this hour-long documentary film a young multi-racial Kanaka Maoli (Native Hawaiian) woman, filmmaker Christen Hepuakoa Marquez, sets out to discover the meaning of her incredibly lengthy Hawaiian name from her estranged mother whose diagnosis as schizophrenic in the 80′s caused their family separation. Christen discovers not only herself within the name, but gains a whole new perspective on the idea of sanity and how cultural differences can sometimes muddle its definition.See More

Hey Gal Vanized,

I have this quasi position where I am officially unoffically an educator. My teaching experience is generally outside of the traditional track. I used to teach the CHASEE math course at Los Angeles High School, I used to tutor, I teach about social justice on the weekends, I'm technically staff at Poly HS right now but I just lead a student group there and am not a teacher at that school. Next year i plan to teach dance classes in Cambodia with Tiny toones and help consolidate their programming. In my job i conduct trainings on Gambling Addiction.

So as far as actual work for teachers I'm clueless because I'm in the Non-profit sector. What do you teach? and i read that somewhere the derby dolls had a youth program is that still going on?

This is to respond to your post, i figured I didn't want to take up more space on the last article, i saw how much room it took on the page. ha.

I have worked on 2 mural projects in the past, about 4 years ago i was a part of a team involved called the "Westside Mural Project". We had created the first part of a mural on Santa Fe blvd close to willow in the westside of Long Beach. We had finished 1 panel but due to lack of public support and internal organizing issues the org fell apart and I am not sure if the mural is still there.
I could go on about the whole thing, lack of community support, actual community opposition lack of focus and direction. A lot of lessons learned from that project.

The second mural I've worked on was a component of a social justice workshop in partnership with CD Tech, Public allies and Santee High School in South Central LA. We did a very large mural in the cafeteria, most of the art planning was through one of our team member who is a prominent muralist in LA. I worked on more the curriculum and education aspect rather than the layout of the mural. That one is still up at the high school, I had heard they wanted to make the class a regular part of their social justice department, but I do not have any updates since I finished with the project.
Raul led our mural portion,

Here is a video of his story.

It's funny because I think I actually saw you on the street on saturday 1st street at the concert. I was actually working with my organization doing youth summer activism training workshops. We work with 21 youth to teach them community organizing skills so that they can lead their own campaigns on issues they are passionate about.

We were in Catalyst Space from 2-6pm next to the barbershop on 1st street. Our program started that day and runs till Aug 21st.

Good to meet you!
