Kafé Neo opened its doors at the corner of 4th and Temple in Oct. 2007. Since then it has been serving Greek flavors infused with American classics. This modern café serves everything from a spicy seafood salad to one of their newer dishes, the lamb burger.
This open faced burger is presented very simply;
Lightly buttered bun, fresh ground lamb patty lightly seasoned to perfection, kefalograviera cheese (which is basically a head-cheese made from lambs milk), flakey yet crunchy onion rings, tomato, and lettuce.
For those of you who have never had lamb before, let’s be clear…once you have a taste, you will be able to recognize it in any dish you have from that point forth. This particular patty is seasoned with a mix of parsley, mint and oregano. It was seasoned to accentuate the nice distinct flavor of the fresh ground meat rather than try and mask it behind too many flavors, which I thought was amazing. The fries that come with the burger are lightly dusted with garlic powder, oregano, salt, pepper, and one or two other mystery ingredients which not only make the fries look great but smell and taste even better.
I have had my fair share of lamb, but only in home cooked meals can I recall the freshness and flavor that this modern Greek café has accomplished. The cheese and onion ring combination add depth to what looks like an unsuspecting burger. When taking a bite, one cannot ignore the contrast in textures from the bun to the patty to the toppings; it’s almost like there should be more on the burger for it to deliver everything it does.
Gus Sverkos, co-owner of Kafé Neo, simply commented, “Growing up in Long Beach, going to school in Long Beach, and living here has really given me the sense to evolve with the city and provide a menu that works well here.” Sverkos also explained that his food philosophy is to keep everything simple, and fresh with a Greek soul. From the friendly staff to the even friendlier prices, Café Neo is one of Long Beach’s hidden gems.
I love this place. The food is super yummy, and the staff are friendly and professional.
I first heard of KafeNeo from the ad on this site. So, I visited to try them out. And, you're correct - it is a "gem" In fact, it is currently one of my favorite spots to eat.
What have you had had there?
I eat breakfast as well as lunch there. For breakfast I usually try their omelets. I like their lamb a lot. So, I sometimes get their lamb chops for breakfast. But, I almost always get their lamb chop dinner.
The service and the staff are always top notch - always. But, it is the food that keeps me coming back.
Man, I was just in there yesterday and the moment I walked in I started craving like five different dishes. I haven't tried the Lamb burger just yet, but it is now on my list!
I've been eating Greek food since I was able to swallow solid food. I'm not Greek, but the culture is in my soul. Visiting Kafe Neo always reminds me about what I love: Flavor, freshness, and friendliness.
+1 For you Sir.
