Occupy Los Angeles and Occupy Long Beach have seen their popularity dwindle a bit in the past week or two. The lack of activity and visibility has taken a toll on their popularity. Well on Monday, a movement of about 200 Occupiers  hit the Port of Long Beach.

The LA Times posted an article about the plans yesterday.

Today, they reported that at least one protester was arrested at the port.

Occupy Long Beach had been posting their plans on facebook about the possible move to occupy the port for a couple of weeks. (Photo from Nikole Cababa via Facebook)

The problem with this was that the police decided to deem this an unlawful protest and showed up with full riot gear to clear the occupiers from the SSA Marine, which is partially owned by Goldman Sachs.

This protest just so happened to land at the same time as the labor union protest that we covered early last week. Believe it or not, this was purely a coincidence since the contract negotiations broke down on Friday, December 12 and the occupiers had been planning the protest for a couple of weeks before.

What do you think that Occupy could have done to protest and not face arrest? Why would this be considered an unlawful protest? Do you think thy made the right move by taking it to the port?

So, yeah I get the whole targeting Goldman Sachs thing, but this also directly impacts workers pay. If the Occupiers stop the work of trucks being unloaded, then the dock workers get sent home and don't get paid for the day...

What I see is a lack of consideration. See why I've been bashing occupy? I'm all about standing up for what you believe in, but people have families to feed and bills to pay.

Yea I know what you mean. Stopping the trucks from being unloaded affects millions of people. Is this a combined effort between Occupy LA and Occupy LB? If so, they might start getting some attention because they are occupying a supply route. Occupying a damn park and living in trees doesn't do anything.

But, if they continue and have some sort of strategic effort put behind this phase of their occupying, they might see some results. Not sure what those results are, but trust, you mess with incoming cargo ($$), be sure that someone is gonna step in.

That's true, but I would like to know WHY they are occupying the port. I would be interested in hearing their answer.

It looks to me as though favor for OLB is faltering, especially after this. Perhaps there are smarter ways to protest without disruption of the Port of LB. I think the error with the port protest is that they are not the real problem. Maybe protesting at the port was a misdirected action? What do you think?

Yeah, that might be true too. I'm sure they were looking for a way to shake things up and not become just a bunch of "sit around the campfire and do nothing serious people.". I guess the port symbolizes the west coast version of Wall Street. Major financial hub and what not. The problem is the Wall Street workers actually are a part of the corrupt system, but the trucker drivers and dock workers are the blue collar 99% that actually make substantial economic contributions to the country... Yes, misdirection indeed.

Well written!!!!

The point of occupy is to draw attention to some wrong so that you attract followers for the movement. This is not the way to do it. It is even more vague than it has been that has confused even the most sympathetic. There are two high profile issues that are being pushed and have credibility with people. One is housing and the other is jobs. Housing is being used in some places and is perhaps the best way to go. I personally have been pushing jobs and have made speeches that can be seen on youtube and many other video up load sites if you search my name Ed Wode. The speech I OCCUPY explains how to protest about jobs to force Obama to bring the jobs back. Link to my speech: http://www.youtube.com/user/ewode?feature=mhee
