So me and my group of friends are for the most part 19. One is turning 20 soon and one is still 18. Often at times we have a hard time trying to figure out what to do in Long Beach when it's past 9pm. We grab food someplace cheap and find ourselves stuck at the dinner table or loitering and chatting in the parking lot. We do not like to loiter and I personally think it's quite embarrassing. The reason why we do this is because we don't know where to go or what to do next (besides from eating!). There are 18+ nightclubs but that's typically not our scene because of the environment and I guess the way people our age behave there. The cover charge is not worth it and there are the clothing restrictions that make things more complicating.
We really can't wait to turn 21 so we can casually hit the bars and just socialize with one another and have a good time. We can have a blast just chatting. The problem is that we don't have a place to do it because we still live with our parents. Sometimes we go to the beach. We usually stay away from the movie theaters because you sit in a dark room of silence and don't really talk to one another. Other times, one of us comes up with a lame excuse to go to Target because we "need something" when in fact we're just wasting money on things that we don't need. In the end, it's almost inevitable to resort to something illegal. We actually considered ice blocking one time! So I am asking you, my fellow 562CityLifers, if you know of any places that are open late and 18+/all ages. We like food. We like drinks. We like music. And we like happy people. Thanks for your input.

Permalink Reply by LB Chica on September 18, 2011 at 12:32pm I love this! Our community is busy creating family events for the kiddies and then we have those festivals for those that are 21+, but we often forget about these group of people where you are not quite an adult but you don't want to be included in some of those kiddies events.
I'm not sure of your living conditions when you say you live w your parents (do you live in a house or an apt) but I can suggest what my younger cousins do, they have late "BBQ's".
They rotate houses but is always the same group of people. They have loud music, they BBQ or order pizza (and yes they do raid the refrigerator for alcohol), and they hang out til very late in the morning in the garage or back yard either playing cards, some stupid daring game, flip cup or whatever.
Also, keep an eye on the events happening in Long Beach, some of them end around 10 or 11pm.
- Events like the Latin & Funk festival that just happened. Free & they had bands on the street
-Check out First Fridays
- Long Beach Roller Derby is a fun event, tickets are super cheap if you get them at GoldStar (about $8 sometimes)
- Mondo Celluloid events, movies at midnight! Not your average movie night trust me
- Zombie Walk in October
-Go camping! cheap and there is places close enough to drive like Malibu Creek that is only an hour away.
I do agree that Long Beach needs places that opens late that is not a bar or club though. If there is ONE thing that I missed from back home is that you can just cross the border after midnight to grab a bite to eat or hang out at a bar once you are 18.
What I don't agree with is the comment about doing something illegal. You always have a choice and I personally do not understand why someone (with the exception of underage drinking as long as you are not driving) will choose to do something illegal in the name of"boredom" regardless of what age you are.
Be safe & stay out of trouble!

We live in an apartment. We do have a spacious driveway where my family and our two neighbors park our cars. We throw birthday parties every so often. Though these are parking spaces so that's typically what they're used for. You know how the parking gets in the more urban areas of Long Beach. Perhaps on a lucky night I'll park my car outside and invite friends over for a kickback. Just hope the grandma downstairs doesn't get upset haha.
Thanks for listing the upcoming events. I'll definitely try to get my friends to venture out to them with me. First Fridays is definitely something I also need to indulge myself in a lot more. Oh and no worries, when I mention "something illegal", I'm for the most part referring to underaged drinking.
