In this hour-long documentary film a young multi-racial Kanaka Maoli (Native Hawaiian) woman, filmmaker Christen Hepuakoa Marquez, sets out to discover the meaning of her incredibly lengthy Hawaiian name from her estranged mother whose diagnosis as schizophrenic in the 80′s caused their family separation. What's up CityLifers? So this morning I was checking the headlines to see if there was any interesting news to share with you all. I came across an article of another marijuana bust in Bixby Knolls.

"Long Beach Police last week made two arrests in connection with an illegal marijuana grow operation in a vacant storefront located next door to the main office of an alternative high school in Bixby Knolls.

Long Beach Police Department Narcotics detectives arrested Robert DeWeese, 64, of Seal Beach, and David Benalt, 25, of Manhattan Beach, on Thursday, July 21, in connection with the illegal marijuana grow operation at 4352 Atlantic Ave., LBPD spokesman Sgt. Rico Fernandez said...
A search warrant was served at the location last Thursday, at which time detectives seized approximately 200 marijuana plants and took the two suspects into custody, Fernandez said."

What are your thoughts on having weed legal or illegal in Long Beach? Do you live near a medical marijuana dispensary? If so, are they a nuisance in the community? Do you know anyone who has benefited from the plant? How do you think the police are handling this situation city-wide?

You can read the rest of the article here.

That's my only real thing, I'm just a bit concerned about the commercialization of it. Enough stuff is already pushed on my kids...

Just legalize it already!! The pros outweigh the cons a hundred fold - tax it and make a TON of money for the city, provide relief to those with medical conditions that could use it, get rid of the gang turf wars (not sure if that is actually still happening but it sounded good, right?) and get thousands of people out of the overcrowded prison system that are only there because of weed related charges!

Personally I would rather be able to go into a pub and smoke a jay then maybe order a couple of beers to ease the inevitable cotton mouth, plus once the munchies kick in I would be ordering food so the restaurant/bar would still make their money - win/win for everyone! :)

Also, from what I have experienced among the general population, you are less likely to wanna start a fight or go jump in a car and go driving like a bat out of hell after smoking some marijuana and possibly kill someone or yourself, but after too many drinks...you know the rest of the story.

Bottom line, everything in moderation and use with some common sense; make it legal, but only to adults above the legal age of 18 (or 21, I guess) in much the same way that alcohol is legal. And if for some reason you are opposed to marijuana, then don't use it! It seems like a no brainer.

oh, and to answer the other question, l live right behind the One Love dispensary and l have yet to see even one problem occur in our neighborhood because of it (we get more rowdy people coming out of Gallagher's). plus, the smell coming out of the building is delicious :)

Haha I like your perspective on that.

I normally hear a lot of complaints from people who live next to bars instead of weed shops. Smoking weed has nowhere near the same effects as getting drunk which can to lead to a lot of harmful stuff. You touched a good point though, moderation is key with ANYTHING.

I was being tongue in cheek with my dilemma, I have no problem with jovial, artistic people who like to mellow their minds with substances.  One Love is the place I live near and I agree, the drunkenness from the bar crowd is more of a concern than the "patients" who frequent One Love.  For example, the people who go to One Love don't then come and pee on my fence but the people from Gallagher's...that's another story. Then there was the woman who exposed her breasts as she walked down Broadway but again, I guess that's only a problem depending on who's watching ;)

a 64 yr old and a 25 yr old. sounds like the pot version of "breaking bad"!

i live a few blocks from 3 dispensary's on broadway, 1 up the street on 7th. i frequent the bars and restaurants on b'way and have never seen any negativity activity around them (or in them for that matter! yes, i have a card). not around the one on 7th but havent noticed anything out of ordinary when driving/riding bike by.

whose benifited? ummm, it makes it a whole lot easier to get yer buzz on! elimantes drug deals gone bad too. after all, havent we decided that we lost the war on drugs? Oh, u mean the plant itself!. It mellows out this high strung, up tight, clinically depressed guy. so i guess it's weed or prozac for me and going green is the trend these days so.....

Terry there like Starbucks on Broadway! Darn near next to each other, lol!
Definitely like this over those heavy prescription drugs!
I say legalize it already and control it just like alcohol.  Not sure why its such a big deal.  I never was much of a user until I developed a medical condition with chronic pain.  I've been prescribed all kinds of painkillers by my Doctors and honestly, I'd rather treat my body with something natural.  I got a medicinal mj card earlier this year and have since stopped taking the vicodin and other gnarly prescriptions.  Now I just have a bit of an edible each night and it does a decent job of keeping the pain away and its all natural!
That's an awesome testimony Barbie...

I would like to see a community MJ garden like a victory garden. Like the one by Eldorado park and the animal shelter. Then set up cameras everywhere and catch all the criminals that try to climb the garden fence. It might be a great way for the police to catch all the criminals with warrants they've been looking for. 2 birds one stoned thing.

...And an art gallery devoted to MJ would really be appropriate for the arts council to set up a grant program for, especially considering how MJ dispensaries have revitalized the LB business community and the city of lb has brought in so much revenues from dispensary permits.

I know this point is controversial...but autism students are regularly prescribed marinol to function....maybe the rules about distances from schools needs to be revisited and spend that time thinking about how marinol can help students with special needs

...also how about a medical garden for each jail in CA!!!!  really use that land and help people with mental problems who are incarcerated or self medicating

A MJ Garden would be a much more positive symbol then a Victory garden if you ask me.
