More than a dozen Olympians are expected to join with the Long Beach Aquatic Capital of America Foundation for “A Salute to Southern California Olympians,” a family festival and fundraiser at the Long Beach Sea Scout Aquatic Center on July 21. The event is part of the annual Long Beach Sea Festival.
The family event, from 11:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m., will feature food, crafts booths, live music, and other activities. Guests also will have the unique opportunity to meet and greet Olympic heroes. Among the Long Beach area Olympians expected to participate include swimmers Susie Atwood, Kathy Heddy Drum, Deena Deardurff Schmidt and Andrew Strenk; water polo players Bruce Bradley, Natalie Golda and Chi Kredell; sailor John Shadden; and track and field star Bob Seagren. An interactive Q&A session with the Olympians hosted by Gazettes Sports reporters JJ Fiddler and Mike Guardabascio will take place at 1 p.m.
Admission, which includes a barbecue lunch, is $5 for adults; children under 17 are admitted free. An opportunity drawing during the event will feature prizes from local businesses with proceeds benefitting Long Beach youth aquatics programs.
The family event is being organized jointly by the Aquatic Capital Foundation, the Long Beach Sea Scout Aquatic Center-BSA, and the Long Beach Sailing Foundation. The Sea Scouts, celebrating their centennial this year, will offer guests an opportunity to tour their facilities, view a history of Sea Scouting, and board some of the Sea Scouts’ nine vessels in the marina.
The Long Beach Sea Scout Aquatic Center is located at 5875 Appian Way, Long Beach, beneath the Second Street bridge.
