Alejandro Jodorowsky's SANTA SANGRE finally comes to The Art Theatre of Long Beach!
From the visionary mind of the man behind 1970's cult classics El Topo and The Holy Mountain comes 1989's Santa Sangre, a surreal horror masterpiece that is quite literally unlike anything you've ever seen.
A glorious and beautiful fantasy that weaves nightmarish visions with utterly surreal and beautiful dream-like images, Santa Sangre is the story of Fenix, a boy who works as a magician at a provincial circus, and who forms a sweet friendship with a young mute clown named Alma. His father, Orgo, is the ringmaster; his mother, Concha, is the Mother Superior of an unconventional convent at the outskirts of the circus. When Concha discovers that Orgo is having an affair with the Tattooed Lady, her reaction sets off a series of events that leads to Fenix's commitment to a mental ward. Years later, Fenix escapes his cell to find Alma, and in the company of a very unexpected visitor.
Honored with a rare four-star review by Roger Ebert, who later included the film in his Top 10 Films of 1989 list, Santa Sangre disappeared into hard-to-find-video obscurity after its theatrical run, joining the ranks of similar bootleg underground classics such as Eraserhead and Forbidden Zone despite its critical success. With the resurgence of Jodorowsy's films on the midnight screening circuit (including our own screenings of both El Topo and The Holy Mountain at The Art Theatre), Santa Sangre is finally seeing the light of day, and on a glorious Blu-ray remaster by Severin Films!
Santa Sangre has easily been one of our most requested titles for our midnight series - we are so very pleased to finally bring this wonderful and unique motion picture to Long Beach!
