In this hour-long documentary film a young multi-racial Kanaka Maoli (Native Hawaiian) woman, filmmaker Christen Hepuakoa Marquez, sets out to discover the meaning of her incredibly lengthy Hawaiian name from her estranged mother whose diagnosis as schizophrenic in the 80′s caused their family separation. Christen discovers not only herself within the name, but gains a whole new perspective on the idea of sanity and how cultural differences can sometimes muddle its definition.See More

Event Description

Bixby Knolls’ First Fridays on October 1 will be the kick-off for GLOBAL (Greater Long Beach Arts Lab) which celebrates and promotes Long Beach's diverse arts and culture. GLOBAL occurs every October as part of National Arts and Humanities Month, a coast-to-coast collective celebration of culture in America. Art-Lantic Avenue in Bixby Knolls will feature the full spectrum of art and music the entire evening and “after hours” fun, too.

October is jam packed with: Expo galleries and live artists, violin virtuoso Jennifer Lindsay, Amoeba People, belly dancing, macro photography, fair trade caravan, “Spiked” improv comedy, free books, saxophones, tarot cards, renowned jazz/pop/Brazillian vocalist Anne Walsh, vintage vinyl, Dixieland, cemetery tour ghosts, community drumming, BK farmers stand, LBSC’s “BENT,” songwriter showcase, Rancho Los Cerritos “historic street walkers,” Sound Walk preview installation, book signing of The Nightmare Navigator by Billy Bonsangue, the Knolls Ranger’s 129th birthday party with cake, Timstrument, and a double helping of the unexpected.

Councilmember James Johnson launches “First Books at First Fridays” at the Dana Branch Library, 3680 Atlantic, and will be reading children’s books beginning at 5:30pm. Enjoy light refreshments and balloon animals for the kids.

First Fridays blurs the lines between artist and attendee with the "interactive" elements now in place. Contribute to "Poetry Box" where you can submit a poem using Bixby Knolls as the inspiration. This includes musings, rusings, reminiscings, wives' tales, lore, mysteries, histories, stories, testimonies, confessions, and secrets.

Attendees are also encouraged to bring something to stick on the "Leave Something Behind" collage. Post a penny, photo, leaf, hair pin, cuff link, heirloom, or anything in your pocket to create a unique abstract collection. Also, bring your creativity for our community art piece where you pick up the pen and draw, sign your name, or leave your mark.

Stop by the First Fridays Information Table from 6:30pm - 8pm, located on the northwest corner of Bixby & Atlantic Ave, where you'll find info about First Fridays, maps, business info, and restaurant recommendations.

When the businesses start to close, "First Fridays After Hours" begins. Nino's Italian Restaurant will feature live artists and a great groove for late night dining and beverages. The Factory also goes late into the night with food, drinks, and sounds of Lars & Friends on dueling pianos. Why go home early? Stay out late and continue the energy.

Dine on Art-Lantic Avenue at one of our tasty restaurants then grab the Big Red Bus that will transport you venue to venue from designated stops at the participating businesses.

This was by far THE BEST First Fridays ever! And that says a lot because the last 3 with 562 City Life have been incredible! It was so much fun last night! The music, the art show, live artists, bar, and general energy. I received so many comments on how nice everyone was! I do think you guys generate the nicest crowd of people. Big thanks to Adam Hass for being our art curator and David Leonard for his contribution too. Let's not forget Red Eye Media, they make some mean drinks. :D
