Long Beach Roller Derby Championship Game Friday, December 9th
Friday night, December 9th, the Queen Mary Dome will be filled with electric energy and suspense as the Bixby Rollerettes take on the 4th Street Retro Rollers for the 2011 championship title.
The Bixby Rollerettes, last year’s defending champs, went undefeated in the regular season, but have suffered some key losses due to player injuries. The team suffered a major blow when their fiercely talented leader Biodiesel (Alyssa Karnopp) sustained a knee injury in their last bout. However, the team is fortunate that Diesel (Lindsey Karnopp, Biodiesel’s big-sister) will skate in her place for the big game. According to Evil Dawn Under (Renee Wilson), “Bixby’s ready! We can’t wait to take victory once again.”
Conversely, the Retro Rollers—who could generously be described as a “hot mess” at the end of last season, finishing in last place—have pulled together and are skating cohesively as a team. They are looking very focused and coming off a decisive victory against the Belmont Hot Broads at the last bout in November.
“The Bixby Rollerettes and the Retro Rollers met earlier in the season, with Bixby winning easily,” says Estro Jen (Michelle Steilin), coach of 4th Street and co-founder of LBRD. “But without Biodiesel, Bixby is a different team, and it seems as though 4th Street is hitting their stride at precisely the right time. It’s going to be an incredible battle.”
In addition to the game there will be a vendor village; fire dancing by Sirena Serpentina; and a halftime band, lzzy and the Catastrophics. All ages are welcome, and alcohol will be available for those with ID.
Tickets are $15 for General Admission (SRO), $20 for Grandstand (unassigned seating), and are available at Moxi Roller Skates on 4th Street, DG Big Donut on 7th, and on Longbeachrollerderby.com. Also, the league is once again offering the “Party Bus V.I.P. ticket, which includes assigned seats, and an optional ride to and from the game on the Big Red Bus with the LBRD girls. The bus will depart from Gallagher's Irish Pub & Grill on Broadway. The V.I.P. tickets are $35 ($25 without the bus ride), and are available only on-line. A limited number of tickets will be available at the door. Doors open at 7pm; game time 8:30pm. No Late seating after halftime (9:30pm). Parking is $12 at the Queen Mary or take the Passport “C” from Downtown for free.
