PROJECT ROOM: Marco Maggi no idea
January 21 – April 29, 2012
Curated by Selene Preciado
Marco Maggi’s Project Room will consist of various sculptural installations reflecting his interest in mapping, anthropology, architecture, and language, such as in his recent sculpture HOTBED (ORANGE), 2009, in which he covered the floor of The Warehouse Gallery in New York, with reams of paper and created tiny paper sculptures on them with a razorblade, as a revision of Henri Matisse’s paper cut-outs. Maggi is best known for his use of everyday and industrial materials such as Plexiglas, acrylic, aluminum foil, paper and cardboard, on which he inscribes a vocabulary that evokes pre-Columbian cultures and early twentieth-century Russian Constructivism. As the artist states, his “drawings resemble writing in a language [he] cannot read,” referring to the modern concept that a drawing reflects thought process.
General admission is $9.00; Seniors/Students $6.00; MOLAA Members and Children under 12 years are Free.
(by the way, MOOLA is FREE to all active Military people and their families!)

Exchange and Evolution: Worldwide Video Long Beach 1974-1999
October 7, 2011 through February 12, 2012
Exchange and Evolution, a retrospective selection of the significant international video works and artists who were part of the historic video art program at the Long Beach Museum of Art (LBMA), will be on view at the Museum from October 7, 2011 - February 12, 2012. The exhibition is the result of research into the numerous cultural exchanges, and the subsequent evolution of ideas made possible by the Museum's media art center. For 25 years, this media art center provided consistent support for artists worldwide. Exchange and Evolution establishes LBMA as a key influence on the growth and development of video as an art form. T
