The Dawn Patrol is comprised of seven local Long Beach dads who decided last year that we wanted to do something unique. So we created THE SWIM 2010, a 28.3 mile swim from Catalina Island to the Long Beach Yacht Club that we will do as a relay on August 1st and we have built-in a fundraising component to benefit some of our favorite local charities.
group of 7 guys swimming together in the Long Beach Yacht Club pool is quickly becoming a cultural phenomena that extends outside the pool, into the ocean and now into the local community. The Dawn Patrol is made up of seven LBYC members: Scott Meyer, Chris Geer, Pete Cassiano, Matt Hanson, Steve Schlom, Michael Bergkvist, and Shawn Oatey. All of us have been training hard during the week in the pool, on Thursdays at Seal Beach and on Saturdays in the Bay. We've participated in local swim races, connected a few local swim groups together and even started a few traditional swims of our own (including the X-mas Tree Swim in the Bay and the infamous 4th of July Taco Surf Run-Swim-Run).
Two weeks ago we officially launched our website (www.lbycdawnpatrol.com) along with the direct link to THE SWIM 2010 (www.theswim2010.com). We are promoting the Catalina relay swim as THE SWIM 2010 and we are collecting donations on our website and via mail through the Long Beach Community Foundation. Our goal is to raise $40,000 to split evenly amongst our four chosen charities: Children Today, Breast Cancer Angels, Casa Youth Shelter and Habitat For Humanity.
Our swim will take place on Saturday night, July 31st as we leave Catalina around 10pm with plans to make it to the LBYC Long Dock for a BIG celebration between 1pm-2pm on Sunday, August 1st.
