In this hour-long documentary film a young multi-racial Kanaka Maoli (Native Hawaiian) woman, filmmaker Christen Hepuakoa Marquez, sets out to discover the meaning of her incredibly lengthy Hawaiian name from her estranged mother whose diagnosis as schizophrenic in the 80′s caused their family separation. Christen discovers not only herself within the name, but gains a whole new perspective on the idea of sanity and how cultural differences can sometimes muddle its definition.See More

Event Description

DOWNTOWN DRIVE IN IS BACK!

In partnership with Hollywood Outdoor Movies and Lunch Truck It, we're kicking off a month of spooky fun in Long Beach with "the first name in laughter from the hereafter," Tim Burton's 1988 creation BEETLEJUICE!

An Oscar winner for Best Makeup, Beetlejuice introduced the world to the titular "Ghost with the Most" - a boozing, flirting, disgusting demon who sets out to help recently deceased newlyweds scare away the annoying  couple that moves into their house - but not before marrying their teen-aged daughter and destroying the surroundings in the process. An 80's favorite with legendary one-liners, Burton's surreal and fantastic effects and design, a classic Danny Elfman score, and a career-launching performance by Winona Ryder, Beetlejuice went on to spawn a beloved cult Saturday morning cartoon and nestle itself comfortably among wonderful and timeless 1980's cult classics.  We can't think of a better flick to kick off a series of Halloween favorites in downtown Long Beach!

Thanks to our event sponsor Lunch Truck It for their assistance in lining up food trucks for this event!  Lunch Truck It  provides Long Beach a new lunch spot every Wednesday - visit Lunch Truck It at www.lunchtruckit.com.

Tickets to Downtown Drive In payable at the gate (cash only!) and are $10 per person, $5 for Long Beach Cinematheque card-carrying Members (it pays to join! - click here for info).   Children 13 and under may enjoy the event free of charge!   "Foodies" welcome to come in free (in-and-out guests who simply wish to come in on foot, order from a food truck, and not stay for the show).

FM Transmission signal will be broadcast to guests in their cars.  There will also be speakers in an area for those who wish to sit in chairs/on blankets - bring whatever you need to be comfortable.   Out of consideration for those around you, please consider low-back chairs.

RSVP to this event on Facebook - please share it with your friends!
